Why 'RAM' is Trending: Is Computer Memory the New Gold in 2026?

If you’ve scrolled through Twitter or Instagram this week, you’ve probably seen the memes: a guy proposing to his girlfriend with a stick of DDR5 memory instead of a diamond ring, or someone trading a used 16GB RAM stick for a second-hand car.

It’s hilarious, but the reality behind the #RAMageddon trend is hitting our wallets hard.
As of December 2025, "RAM" is trending globally, not because of a movie or a celebrity, but because we are in the middle of the biggest computer memory shortage in a decade. The price of a standard 32GB DDR5 kit has jumped nearly 300% in just three months—from around ₹6,000 to over ₹18,000 in India.
Why is this happening? The culprit is two letters: AI.

While we were busy generating images and chatting with bots, tech giants like NVIDIA, Google, and OpenAI began buying up every scrap of memory chip supply to power their massive Data Centers. Manufacturers like Samsung and Hynix have shifted their factories to make "HBM" (High Bandwidth Memory) for AI servers, leaving the consumer market—gamers, video editors, and regular PC users—fighting over scraps.
